Travelogues
I usually take one month-long pleasure trip each year, picking a few places
in a broad region that sound enticing and then figuring out how to connect them
by land or sea. Most often, I travel solo, which means I'm not subjecting
anyone to my spontaneous decisions or to destinations that don't seem
particularly interesting; it's also easier to meet other travelers that way.
However, I've gone with a partner on two trips and enjoyed some wonderful
moments that I probably wouldn't have had alone.
Much of what fascinates me about traveling is watching the transitions between places, and I'm just as happy to be on a train or bus
from one city to another as visiting a museum. I don't mind an occasional flight, but
I'd rather see how the scenery segues from place to place. For local transportation,
walking and subways are splendid, buses are OK, and I'll do almost anything
possible to avoid getting into a taxi, which is often overpriced and involves
haggling over the fare in many parts of the world.
In addition to the travelogues below, there's a travelogue of my time as
keyboardist on the Fosse musical tour, from 29 October 2002 to 21 May
2004 (which includes Trip 8, Morocco and Southern Spain, because it was a period
of time off).
