I'd had so many sushi cravings during the preceding year that I figured it
was time to head to the source. Also, I hadn't had many good train rides in the
previous few trips. I was ready to use some frequent-flyer miles on an off-peak
ticket, whiz around the country on a $624 three-week Japan Rail Pass, and eat
everything I saw.
